Don't Be Confused by Construction!
The
re-do of the Zoo's front entrance is well along, and the new
front gate will be ready in time for spring break. With
the always-changing construction projects, it may look at bit
odd to you as you approach the front of the Zoo, but never fear
- we are open for our winter hours of Wednesday-Sunday, 9am-4pm.
Already, you are seeing some new and colorful awnings that will
cover the re-configured buildings, and a new "archway" entry is
soon on the way. Please feel welcome to come inside - most
things are open, weather permitting, except Encounters, where
the all new Flights of
Fancy presented by Citizens Energy Group will be
ready for its grand opening on Memorial Day Weekend.
Indianapolis Zoo Super Bowl Fundraiser Provides Super Gift for
African Elephants
The
New York Giants weren't the only big winners in Super Bowl XLVI.
Giants more than 8,000 miles from Lucas Oil Stadium were big
winners, too. That's because an elephant conservation
project in Africa will receive more than $90,000 from a special
parking fundraiser at the Zoo. Our downtown location made
us a convenient parking location for the big game for both local
residents and out-of-town visitors, and in a novel approach to
conservation funding, our parking fees both leading up the Super
Sunday and on game day netted $90,772 to support the Tarangire
Elephant Project in Tanzania.

Tanzania
The
group operates the Tarangire National Park in northeast Tanzania
along the east coast of Africa and has been committed to the
conservation of the African elephant for the past 20 years.
We have been a significant supporter of the project since 2006.
Dr. Charles Foley, who heads the group will use the unexpected,
but very much appreciated, windfall to start a radio tracking
project that will mark the movements of elephants across the
Park, greatly assisting in Foley's work in protecting the vital
migration corridors of the elephants. Many thanks to
everyone who contributed to saving the elephants by parking at
the Zoo. You made this super gift possible!

Put a Tiger on Your Trunk!
Thanks to input from Facebook fans, the Indianapolis Zoo is
represented by the image of the beautiful and endangered Amur
tiger on the new Zoo specialty license plate that is now
available. The Zoo was one of 10 organizations recently
approved for specialty license plates by the Indiana Bureau of
Motor Vehicles (BMV).

The
tiger plate is now available for purchase through the BMV
(in.gov/BMV). The cost is $40, with $25
going directly to the Zoo to support food and medicine for the
animals in its care. The Indianapolis Zoo is a non-profit
organization that receives no direct tax support, so
contributions from programs like this are essential to
supporting the Zoo’s conservation mission.
That mission is
critical to many animal species, none more so than the Amur
tiger, which is down to only a few hundred animals left in the
wild and about an equal number in human care.
The Indianapolis Zoo has three Amur tiger currently that
are the stars of the recently opened Tiger Forest presented by
Citizens Energy Group exhibit.
In 2010, Hoosiers purchased 442,573 specialty plates that
generated more than $11 million for the sponsoring
organizations.
Great News - Taz Update as of
2-2-12
Great
News! Taz continues to do just wonderfully, and now that
he's sometimes out in the "big pool" with the girls, he is doing
his little part during those shows, too. He's pretty good
at a dorsal layout and doing a pirouette, just two of the many
behaviors he's learning so that trainers can monitor his ongoing
health. He's now 178 pounds and 6'3" long and loving his
diet of herring and capelin. The trainers report Taz gets
along with all the females, but it's Ripley that likes to play
"in loco parentis" to the little orphan. Taz is eager to
participate with dolphins and humans & he continues to be very
playful. We will keep you updated on Taz’s progress.
